When finding lawnmower parts or booking a service, it's crucial to know the model number and serial number of your lawnmower. In most cases the model and serial number are clearly displayed somewhere on the lawnmower, but the location differs between manufacturers.

This short guide will help you identify where to find the model and serial number of your lawnmower, including handy pictures. We've also included example model and serial numbers for several manufacturers to make this even easier.

Quick find your brand

Allett Lawnmowers

On the rear of the mower, sitting above the rear roller or on the side, you will find a sticker which displays the model number and serial number of your Allett lawnmower.

Hayter Lawnmowers

On the rear of your Hayter's mower cutter deck there will be a sticker displaying information including the model and serial number. Hayter's model numbers are very simple and are usually made up of three numbers followed by a letter.

Honda Lawnmowers

On your Honda lawnmower there will be an identification plate which displays key information about your mower, including the model and serial number.

The plate is normally found on the top of the cutter deck towards the back, between the handles. If it's an older model prior to 2000, the identification plate may be on the side of the deck.

On the rear of the cutter deck, either facing upwards or on the side, you will find a sticker which clearly states the model number, product number and serial number of your Husqvarna mower.

On the cutting deck of your Mountfield mower there will be a silver label displaying the model, article number and serial number.

The location of the label differs depending on the model you own, but it should be towards the back of the mower deck between the handles, or on the side.

STIHL Lawnmowers

On the top of the cutter deck towards the handles there will be a sticker which displays the model number, serial number and other information such as the sound power level.

On older STIHL (and Viking) models the sticker may be elsewhere on the mower deck but should be easy to find.

John Deere Lawn Tractors

The location of the identification plate varies on John Deere lawn tractors, but it's likely to be either on the chassis behind the front wheel, or under the wheel arch behind the back wheel.

The identification plate will provide all of the information needed for identifying parts and servicing requirements, including the Product Identification Number (serial number), model number and date of manufacture.

Please note, your cutter deck may have a different serial number to the power unit. There will be an identification plate on the side of your deck displaying this information.

Located behind the seat of your John Deere zero turn there will be an identification plate displaying all the information you need, including the model number, serial number and date of manufacture.

Westwood and Countax Lawn Tractors

Westwood and Countax make it really easy to find all the information you will need. Located on the chassis near the front wheel is a sticker which displays the model number, serial number plus the date of manufacture, engine and gearbox serial number and other useful information.

Older tractors, back to 2001, may have a serial number format similar to:

Please note, your cutter deck may have a different serial number to the power unit. There will be an identification plate on the side of your deck displaying this information.

Mountfield Lawn Tractors

On your Mountfield lawn tractor you will find the identification sticker beneath the seat. The seat should simply lift on it's hinges, and the identification sticker will be located between the seat springs. The sticker clearly displays both the model number and the serial number of your machine, as well as other useful information such as the weight.

Why finding your model and serial number is important

When your lawnmower has a problem, ordering the correct parts the first time will allow you to get back up and running as quickly and hassle free as possible. With your model and serial number to hand, the task of identifying the parts you need becomes much easier.

If you can't find the identification plate

It may be possible for us to work out your model number by looking at other aspects of the machine, but without the exact details from your mower it becomes much more difficult to identify the parts you need.

The same model from different years aren't guaranteed to use the exact same parts. This is down to manufacturers investing in product development to increase quality, improve performance or reduce costs - meaning parts will change over time.

Don't confuse your lawnmower with your engine

If you have a petrol mower, it's important to understand that your engine may be a different make to your lawnmower. For example, certain Hayter lawnmowers used Briggs & Stratton engines, and some Mountfield lawnmowers used Honda engines.

If it's an engine part you need, such as a gasket or fuel system part, making sure to find the model and serial number of your engine will help you find the parts you need.
